Information on Individual International Health Insurance Policies

If you live or work abroad, you probably need an international health insurance policy tailored to your needs. Allianz Care offers individual or family policies, students, anyone thinking of having a child or even for employees who no longer wish to be covered by a group policy.

What is international health insurance?

These are comprehensive medical insurance programs that offer certain benefits, such as reimbursement of costs related to hospitalization, medical evacuation, and access to necessary care for those living and working abroad. Allianz Care insurance policies are flexible and can be tailored to specific needs.

International health insurance is the same as travel insurance?

Although these two types of insurance are often considered to be equivalent, they are quite distinct from each other. Travel insurance offers coverage in the event of a flight cancellation or loss of luggage or personal belongings, and for certain emergency medical treatments. This type of product is designed for short trips abroad and has a limited shelf life.

International health insurance, on the other hand, offers long-term coverage for both emergency treatment and routine medical care. Coverage varies by the specific program, but typically includes inpatient care, regular medical checkups, pre-existing conditions, and more.

Do I need international health insurance to travel abroad?

Regardless of the fact that in some countries global medical coverage may not be a legal requirement, it is always a good idea to take out such a policy. Moving to a new country of residence, where you may have language difficulties or lack a network of acquaintances, can greatly complicate a situation already made difficult by the need for medical treatment. Depending on the country of destination, the level of local health care services may differ from what you are used to in your home country. With this type of insurance, you can rely on our long list of approved healthcare facilities to receive the best care available.

Does my health insurance policy cover travel abroad?

This depends on the specific policy taken out. Some policies offer partial coverage for emergency treatment, but do not include medical evacuation. If in doubt, ask your insurance company.

What does an international health insurance policy offer?

Allianz Care offers individual and flexible international health insurance policies to meet any personal need. There are two levels of coverage: Care Pro and Care Plus. Both levels offer standard coverage, which includes:

Single room in the hospital

  • Inpatient / day-hospital and out-of-hospital treatment for emergencies
  • Medical evacuation
  • Cancer services

The Care Pro program also offers coverage for emergency dental care.

It is also possible to include in the policy additional benefits that cover out-of-hospital care, dental care, medical repatriation, and maternity.

Geographical area of coverage

This is the geographic area of validity for international health insurance coverage. Our policies offer coverage in three specific areas: "World Wide", "World Wide Excluding United States" and "Africa Only". The cost of coverage will depend on the area you choose and you will be able to receive the required care in any country included in the area.

For example, if treatment is not available locally and your policy includes medical evacuation coverage, we will cover your travel costs to the nearest eligible and eligible healthcare facility. If, on the other hand, the requested treatment is available locally but you prefer to treat yourself in another health facility within the coverage area, we will cover the cost of the treatment but will not reimburse the travel expenses. Our worldwide network of healthcare providers includes more than 900,000 physicians and approved centers.

In addition to the benefits already described, this type of insurance offers further advantages. An Allianz Care policy gives you access to:
