A PLATE AGAINST DIABETES

Properly managing one's diet is, along with physical activity and drug treatment, one of the pillars of diabetes management. Here are a few tips !

Think about sweeteners!

In case of diabetes , it is advisable to maintain a blood sugar level as stable as possible, and therefore to avoid consuming too much sugar! Good news: stevia and aspartame are 200 times sweeter than traditional table sugar and, in reasonable doses, have no impact on blood sugar levels.

To your glycemic indexes

The higher a food has a glycemic index (GI) , the faster it releases sugar into the body and raises blood sugar. Prefer foods with low glycemic indexes , such as pasta, brown rice, certain fruits... On the contrary, banish chocolate bars, "normal" sodas or fruit juices (even "without added sugar") ...

The right cooking

Cooking also has an impact on the glycemic index : the more a food is cooked, the higher the GI rises. Prefer al dente pasta to overcooked pasta! Also favor steam cooking , which also helps to preserve the nutritional qualities of food (vitamins and minerals) !

Watch out for grease!

In case of type 2 diabetes , it is essential to lose weight. Avoid fat! When this is not possible, prefer unsaturated fats (of vegetable origin or present in fish) to saturated fats (of animal origin: butter, meat, cheese, etc.) which are more harmful for the heart and vessels.

Ask for advice

A dietician can help you establish a tailor-made diet and answer all your questions. Your pharmacist is also available to answer your questions, advise you and/or refer you to a specialist.

Advice from your Giphar pharmacist

What to eat in case of hypoglycemia?

Hypoglycemia is materialized by a feeling of hunger, sweating, tremors, dizziness, a feeling of anxiety... and in extreme cases by a coma . How to "resuce" yourself as quickly as possible? By consuming 3 squares of sugar or a tablespoon of honey or 20 cl of soda or "non-light" fruit juice.
If the person loses consciousness, an injection of glucagon - a hormone that raises blood sugar - may be needed. It is advisable to ensure that relatives are able to perform such injections in order to be able to react if necessary. Do not hesitate to discuss this with your doctor.
