3 studies that a woman should undergo to detect breast cancer early

October 19 is the International Breast Cancer Day, but the whole month is painted pink to raise awareness about this disease , promote its early detection, as well as adequate treatment to increase survival , because in 2020 alone, it took the lives of 685 thousand women around the world: 3 studies that you must carry out to detect breast cancer early.

In an exclusive interview for Salud180, Dr. Francisco Olguín Sánchez, surgeon and internist, who currently serves as Medical Director of Oncology at Pfizer Mexico , told us that there are two main types of breast cancer: infiltrating ductal carcinoma and carcinoma infiltrating lobular, which can spread and form metastases in other parts of the body.

“ The fight against breast cancer is not only limited to one month , this must be a permanent issue because it is already a public health issue in our country, however, the diagnosis of breast cancer is not a death sentence , There are treatments that can change the course of Mexican women, ”said Dr. Francisco Olguín.

Breast cancer is a disease in which the cells of the breast tissue multiply without control, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), carcinoma can occur in different parts of the breast , which consists of three main parts:

Lobule : glands that produce milk

Ducts – the tubes that carry milk to the nipple

Connective tissue: surrounds and supports all parts of the breast, it is made up of fibrous and adipose tissue.

This disease is usually aggressive because it is capable of spreading outside the breast through blood vessels and lymphatic vessels , however, when it reaches other parts of the body it means that it has metastasized, therefore it is very important to promote culture of self-examination , describes Dr. Francisco Olguín.

“It is important that women self-examine every day in front of the mirror , that they go to their doctor to be told how to do it and that it be an effective self-examination to detect some alarm data in time, for example, changes in the asymmetry of the breast, dimpling, redness in the breast, peeling, you can feel a lump or increase in volume, at that time, it is necessary to see your doctor immediately for follow-up , "said the specialist.

According to information from the Mayo Clinic Medical Institute , nipple inversion can also be a warning sign, especially when it is a recent change and is not congenital, however, some women go to have their nipples pierced to "jump" this part of your body without a medical point of view.

“At the moment in which an alteration in the breasts is detected, you should go to your doctor immediately, it is not recommended to carry out any aesthetic maneuver because we can modify the course of the disease. Once the patient is evaluated by the specialist and there is no risk, then an aesthetic procedure can be performed”, recommended Dr. Olguín.

In Mexico, breast cancer represents the first cause of death among women, data from the Global Cancer Observatory reveals that in 2020, our country registered an incidence of breast cancer with around 29 thousand 919 new cases in women above the 20 years.

Receiving a diagnosis of breast cancer does not mean a "death sentence", as long as it is detected in time, hence the importance of going to our specialist and performing periodic tests with the aim of preventing and caring for our health.

What tests diagnose breast cancer?

Every woman over the age of 20 should perform self-exams on her breasts to detect abnormalities. Mammography is the most common screening test for breast cancer, which can be performed optionally among women aged 40 to 44 years, but from 45 to 54 years it is mandatory to be performed annually.

Breast ultrasound can be used to determine if a new breast lump is a solid mass or a fluid-filled cyst. If the abnormality is suspicious, a sample of the breast cells is taken for analysis.

On the other hand, magnetic resonance imaging is often used in women at high risk of developing breast cancer, as well as a yearly mammogram starting at age 30.

Breast cancer is a disease that in 2020 claimed the lives of more than 685 thousand women around the world, don't be part of the statistics #TócateParaQueNoTeToque.
